From Passion to Profit – Start Your Business in 6 Weeks or Less!: A step-by-step guide to making money from your hobby by selling online is a practical, step-by-step guide to start making money from your (handmade) hobby by starting to sell online.
Social media expert and crafter Claire Hughes promises it will take you only 6 weeks to get on line (!).
When I read that I was to be honest a little dubious if this would be at all possible, but I think Claire is right as she says:
‘Creative people are often perfectionists who like to tinker with things until they are just so. [ …]
By setting a deadline, I’m giving you a workable target to aim for. […]
It’s challenging, but realistic. It’s also just short enough that your friends/husband/dog/kids will forgive you for abandoning them when you get out the other side.’
So, there you go … Stop procrastinating!
Get into action and focus on what will get you your handmade products online.
In 6 weeks Claire will take you step-by-step from deciding what creative business YOU want to what YOUR CLIENTS want, to how to sell your crafts online and getting down to business, to preparing for your online launch and launching in week six!
This is a straight forward, practical and inspiring book that breaks the whole process of launching your craft business online down for you into do-able, bite-size chunks. There are no bells and whistles here, but practical clarity on what you need to focus on and just do.
From Passion to Profit – Start Your Business in 6 Weeks or Less!: A step-by-step guide to making money from your hobby by selling online reads like a blog: fast moving, interspersed with columns and top 5 tips, full of quotes and illustrations. The design is mostly grey and pink, probably connecting well with the mostly female readership of this book (sorry guys!).
There are lots of practical worksheets.
And each (weekly) chapter is finished with a practical case study of an online creative business and a handy checklist you can tick off.
You soon will get down to business – this book is to the point!
But it doesn’t just deal with some of the practicalities you need to think about (like pricing, product descriptions, shop policies, deliveries, dealing with returns and complaints), but also about some of the fears that are holding you back, or the shift in mind set you need to make to start selling your crafts online.
But it doesn’t dwell on this. This book doesn’t delve deep into its subject matter. It’s practical and to the point: ‘do this now, work on that next’.
Get ready to launch your craft business online quickly!
What I really liked about this book …
The parts of the book I especially liked were a handy, illustrated flow-chart to help you decide which online option is best: Should you have your own website or use one of the existing online market places like Etsy?
In the middle of From Passion to Profit – Start Your Business in 6 Weeks or Less!: A step-by-step guide to making money from your hobby by selling online you will find an incredibly useful directory reviewing all the various online options that are available to creative businesses, including a review of actual online sites selling crafts, handmade, fashion, surface pattern, vintage and more. From well-known market places like Etsy and ASOS Market place, to lesser known craft and gift market places, and market places like Threadless or Society 6 were you can sell your illustrations or surface pattern designs to be reproduced onto t-shirts and mobile phone covers.
It also includes great info about a fantastic selection of e-commerce software for creative businesses, with their costs/fees and their pro and cons. Just for these 16 pages of directory it’s worthwhile getting the book for!
No, your online presence will not be perfect after six weeks (and Claire admits that) but what counts is that you are out there and selling your crafts online. The whole point is: get started, then use real feedback from your real clients to make changes. Improve based on real clients.
Indeed, this is a perfect book if you have been procrastinating and have come up with loads of excuses for NOT launching your creative brand online. This book will get you into action!
It’s aimed at beginners, who are passionate about what they do, but don’t know where to start. If that sounds like you, get this book now!
