This is part of our tradition at the end of the year … The End of Year Review. In this reflective session Patricia asks 7 big questions to reflect, review and celebrate 2023! Each have several layers. Some questions will be easy to answer, some might need some more work or research into your numbers. Some are thought-provoking others are inspiring. Do all of them or choose the questions that work for you!

Patricia also asks questions that might help you to get ready for 2024!

To do the full End of Year Review we recommend around 2-4 hours. But of course you can decide to only focus on 1 or 2 questions, and still get a lot out of working on those! The big advantage of learning online is … that you can stop / start this session whenever you like so that you can write down your answers in your own time.

We invited ADHD expert Amanda Perry to talk to our Business Club members, but as we thought that our 2024 diary & journal users would find this session useful too we extended the invite, so this is a BONUS session for you! And I think a very useful one indeed. In this session Patricia interviews Amanda, and they discuss the following:

  1. Dear Patricia, I love your planner very much because it makes on come back to the ground and be realistic and accountable. I spend an enjoyable time planning with it. I have several questions around the seasonal sales that you made me aware of. How can we find out what the seasonal sales are in our area of business? As small businesses that cannot afford to frequently give discounts in every season, I find myself in competition with the rest of the big brands that can afford it. My questions: what essential seasonal sales should one concentrate on? When shall one start the warmup phase without getting the customers bored? Can one go back 100% full price after all the seasonal sales when customers are waiting for discounts? Regarding celebration days that are almost every day, can one still keep the full price? Thank you very much!

    • Hi Roxana
      You are not obliged to give any discounts at all, and many businesses don’t! I would especially not offer a ‘blanket’ discount of say 10%-15% off anything as that really damages your repuation but also that discount on well-selling items really damages your bottom line (and probably doesn’t really persuade the client to buy from you!).
      If you do a seasonal sale then it’s likely to be in January and July, which were traditionally the times that fashion companies/department stores would do a sale. Check in advance what your worst sellers are and give a great discount on that, and maybe include some samples as well in your sale? Giving a discount of 40% or 50% on a few items is what the sale is about … to get rid of genuinely old stock. And then stop making those items in the future and learn from what sells and what doesn’t!!! I would keep the sale period short (3-5 days) and no ‘warm up’ required! But I would very much give your email subscribers maybe ‘first dips’ and let them know say 2 days in advance … this can encourage your social media followers to sign up to your email list!

      I am personally a bigger fan of offering something extra e.g. create sets and give a bit of discount on when they buy 2-3 items together, or offer free p&p for your previous clients or email subscribers for a limited time.

  2. According to My Wheel of Business, my marketing is in most need of work. Number 1 in Marketing- get website done and ready to represent my business fully. I am still in process of rewriting copy, need to figure out shipping (cost/packaging/insurance) so I can load artwork in online store. I am still working with list Anne Marie gave me to work on, a little slower than I had hoped.

  3. Hi Patricia, A quick question about re-calculating my hourly rate.
    At college, many years ago we were taught to allow for 30% of lost time over the working week, to allow for admin, non productive work etc.
    You mention about the 40% creating, 40% marketing, 10% research & training and 10% admin/ finance rule.
    Should I be calculating my hourly rate, based on me only being productive (actually in the workshop making) 40% of the week? Based on a 40 hour week, 16 hours of actual production each week.

    • Great question but indeed right … I often suggest a daily rate rather than an hourly rate. So for designer makers indeed I think 40% spend on making work that you can sell is a realistic figure. So if you work 5 days/week that’s 2 days per week. If you then multiply that by 50 weeks roughly you get 100 working days only in the year.

      So, if you want a salary of say £20K + all your costs are say £15K then you need to generate £35K in the year to become profitable. So quick calculation then is to use your turnover goal of £35K/100 = £350,- per day … (which would be £700 per week or roughly £3,150 per month (remember that’s not your salary! It also covers your business costs incl. materials etc). This is just a quick calculation to give you a ball part figure.

      That sounds like a lot and many creatives wont dare to charge that, hence they often don’t have a high salary (as they rarely skimp on the business costs!). But often if you have longer commissions over say 6-8 weeks then it often can work out.
